Opening Session: Building Our Future Together

Our opening session sets the scene for the day and for the future of Accent.

We begin by reflecting on our journey so far as we celebrate 60 years of Accent, recognising the difference colleagues have made to customers, communities and each other over the decades. Through a special opening video and welcome from Chief Executive Nick Apetroaie, we'll explore why the future matters and why the choices we make today will shape the next chapter of our story.

We'll then look beyond Accent to understand the wider environment in which we operate. Alastair Smyth from the National Housing Federation will provide a unique insight into the political, economic and social forces shaping housing today, exploring what great organisations are doing across the sector, the challenges we must navigate and the opportunities we can seize in the years ahead.

Finally, Nick and the Executive Team will come together for an open conversation about the future of Accent. Together, we'll reflect on our performance, the progress we've made over the last 12 months, how we compare across the sector and the priorities that will define our Year of Delivery. We'll also welcome Dean and Conan to their first Colleague Conference as Executive Directors, sharing their early reflections and ambitions for the future.

Whether you work directly with customers or behind the scenes, this session is an opportunity to step back from the day-to-day, understand the bigger picture and see how your role contributes to building Accent's future.

60 years of making a difference. Building our future together.

Nick Apetroaie

Nick joined Accent with experience of the housing sector, encompassing over 15 years of leadership experience across both public and private entities.

During his time at Habinteg, he has helped the organisation transform its tenant engagement approach, built a strong customer centric culture, accelerated investment in current homes as well as restarting Habinteg’s development programme, and increased Habinteg’s impact at local and national level on the accessibility and inclusivity agenda.

Previously, Nick held leadership roles at Viridian, Optivo and RNIB where he spearheaded transformative initiatives that significantly enhanced customer experience and organisational culture.

Morning Choice Session 2: Customer Experience in Practice. What our customers really experience

What does great customer experience really look and feel like? In this thought-provoking session, Jenny will share insights, stories and reflections that challenge us to view our services through the eyes of our customers. Together, we'll explore the difference between what we intend to deliver and what customers actually experience and consider what we can all do to make a positive difference.

Expect practical examples, fresh perspectives and plenty of food for thought from the CEO of, TPAS – the tenant engagement experts.

Morning Choice Session 3: Behind the Scenes: How Accent is Held to Account

Ever wondered what happens behind the scenes to make sure Accent is delivering for customers, managing homes safely and making the right decisions?

In this session, Kate Elder will take you inside the governance, assurance and regulatory frameworks that help shape how we operate as an organisation. You'll discover how we're held accountable, the standards we're expected to meet, and why we see regulation as the starting point, not the finish line.

With our upcoming regulatory inspection on the horizon, Kate will also explain what inspectors will be looking for, what we're doing to prepare, and how colleagues across the organisation contribute to demonstrating the quality of our services every day.

Whether you're new to Accent or have been here for years, this session offers a fascinating insight into how we work, how we challenge ourselves to improve, and how we make sure customers remain at the heart of every decision.

Kate Elder

Director of Strategy, Governance and Assurance, Accent Housing Limited

Kate is our Director of Strategy, Governance and Assurance. She joined Accent in June 2024 after working in a number of corporate and service-delivery roles in social housing and local government.

She is a qualified Chartered Governance Professional, which still feels a bit scary sometimes (even to her!). Kate is passionate about making governance, risk and assurance practical, enabling and values-
driven, and about linking this clearly with how we improve outcomes for customers and colleagues.

She is part of our Senior Leadership Team at Accent, and is keen to demystify and simplify regulation and governance so that it just becomes part of what we do every day.

Kate lives with her family in the North East of England, close to Newcastle, where one of her highlights of the year has been a roof-top tour of St James’ Park (which she is keen to say does not necessarily reflect her football colours!). She is also a trained coach and mentor.

Drawing on lessons from Olympic Gold Medallist Ben Hunt-Davis and the men's rowing eight, this interactive session will challenge you to think differently about teamwork, performance and the "unwritten rules" that shape how teams operate.

High performance starts with great conversations…
